- Perceptions of Military Psychology Study -
My name is Jessica Ford, Ph.D. and I am a faculty member at East Carolina University in the psychology department. I am writing to invite you to participate in a research study entitled, “Faculty and Student Perceptions of Military Psychology”.

The purpose of this research is to measure attitudes and perceptions of military psychology among graduate students and faculty members in psychology programs. By doing this study, I hope to learn what demographics, values, attitudes, and support networks factor into student and faculty perception of military psychology. This research has been approved by ECU University & Medical Center Institutional Review Board (UMCIRB), # 19-000167

To participate in this study, individuals must meet the following criteria:
 - A graduate student currently enrolled in a psychology program (e.g., clinical counseling, I/O, educational, cognitive, experimental, community, developmental psychology), OR
- A faculty member teaching at least one course in a graduate psychology program

Below is a link to the online survey. Your responses will be kept completely confidential. The maximum time needed to complete the entire survey is approximately 15-20 minutes. If you agree to take part in this research, you will be asked to respond to demographics questions and complete a short survey responding to statements about military psychology. Link

From Combat to Clinical Work
My name is LaTosha Ramos Lake and I am a doctoral student at the University of Denver Graduate School of Professional Psychology. I am also a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. I am inviting Veterans and current military members to participate in my research study, “From Combat to Clinical Work: Exploring Veteran Experiences Transitioning from the Military to the Practice of Psychology.”

This study will examine the benefits and challenges of transitioning from military culture to the practice of clinical psychology from the perspective of graduate level psychology students with prior military experience. Specific areas of inquiry will include overall demographics, connecting with peers, self-disclosure of service, perceptions of stress, use of supervision and consultation, decision making, and lasting effects of personal military/combat experiences. You are eligible to participate if

- You are a student in a graduate level psychology program or you graduated this year, 2019, from a graduate level psychology program.* this includes students who are completing their pre-doctoral internship.
- You served in the military prior to the start of your psychology graduate program.
- You have had at least one academic year of supervised clinical experience

Eligible participants will be asked to complete a 15-25 minute online questionnaire (completion time varies based on length of responses). No identifiable information will be collected by the survey and IP addresses will not be recorded. Participants will remain completely anonymous.
Please feel free to forward this invitation to other Veterans/current military members, programs, or departments that may find it of interest. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate your willingness to share your experiences and contribute to a better understanding of the strengths, challenges, and needs of Veterans/military members while transitioning to the practice of psychology. If you have any questions about this study, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email (Latosha.ramos@du.edu) or my faculty sponsor, Lavita Nadkarni, PhD (lavita.nadkarni@du.edu).
The study will take place via online Qualtrics survey (see below)! Survey will be available until 10/19/19

Calling All Women Therapists in the VA
Dear Colleagues: We are seeking masters- and doctoral-level women clinicians with a minimum of one year of experience in providing therapy in Veterans Health Administration Settings.Specifically, we are interested in better understanding the experiences of women therapists providing therapy in VHA settings, with a particular focus on workplace culture and experiences of sexual harassment.

Participation in this study requires a masters or doctoral degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or another closely related field and at least one year of experience in providing therapy in VHA settings. Participation will require completing and emailing a demographics form and consent form to the principal investigator (Kate Meade, katelyn.meade@chatham.edu) and a 30-60 minute telephone interview. All participants in the study will receive a $15 Amazon gift card, which will be emailed to you after the completion of the initial interview. Given the sensitive nature of this study we will work with participants to find times to complete the telephone interview that allow participants to have maximum privacy (e.g. outside of work hours). Furthermore, given the sensitive nature of the study extra care will be taken to remove or change any information that we as researchers or you as a participant believe could be used to identify you or your place of employment. If you agree to participate in this study, you are free to refuse to answer any questions or withdraw participation at any time without penalty.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please contact Kate Meade (katelyn.meade@chatham.edu)for more information.  Thank you in advance for your assistance with this research study!

Sincerely, Kate A. Meade, MA. Principal Investigator Jill D. Paquin, PhD Research Advisor Graduate Psychology Programs Chatham University jpaquin@chatham.edu

Help Seeking in Military Personnel Study (Updated) - Samantha Daeuwala
My name is Samantha Daruwala and I am a second year graduate student at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). I am principal investigator for my thesis study recruiting Active Duty (AD) military personnel to voluntarily take part in my thesis study, titled “Help Seeking in Military Personnel” (faculty advisor: Dr. Mike Anestis). The main purpose of the study is to examine how various experiences and factors influence help seeking for suicidal thoughts and emotional or personal problems in military personnel. The study was IRB-approved on January 7th, 2019 by USM’s School of Psychology in Hattiesburg, MS (irb@usm.edu; (601) 266-5997). Participants are asked to take a 30-60 minute online anonymous survey about their beliefs, experiences, prior suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and willingness to seek help from a variety of military-specific sources. No identifying information will be collected to ensure participants’ confidentiality. All data will be stored on a secure, password-protected computer.

**Based on feedback from participants, we have also created a Veteran version of our survey, which can be found here. Please share the following links with any service members, AD or Veteran, who you think may be interested:

Veterans: https://usmep.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eIHYczTa583vsfX
Active Duty: https://usmep.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cCsg7r9SONqcPSR

Inclusion Criteria: All participants must be at least 18 years of age, able to speak and read English, and be current or former Active Duty U.S. military personnel. Given that we will be recruiting on a volunteer basis, we aim to recruit up to 500 individuals (250 male, 250 female). Although this study asks about suicidal ideation, participants do not need to have suicide-related experiences to participate.

Risks: This study asks about past suicidal ideation and behavior. Although research has consistently indicated that such questions do not induce risk, the possibility of minor and transient increases in negative emotions remains. To minimize risk, all participants will be provided with a list of mental health resources available to military personnel. With your help, we hope to help develop a clearer picture about how we can better promote help seeking and prevent suicide in service members and their loved ones.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at Samantha.daruwala@usm.edu.

Spring Address from your Student Affairs Committee Chair

23 APR 2019

Student Affiliates:

The Student Affairs Committee has had an exciting year thus far. We have hosted two webinars and have several more in the works, including an updated HPSP webinar. We are also in the process of finalizing programming details for the 2019 APA Convention in Chicago, IL (August 8-11). I hope that those of you who are planning on attending the convention this year make some time for our Division 19 events. We will have several presentations, mentorship opportunities, and socials available to our members and their friends and family. Look for more details related to the APA Convention this summer!

Aside from our upcoming plans, I also have some exciting news for our student affiliates. During the annual Midyear Meeting of the Executive Committee (EXCOM) in February, it was unanimously decided that affiliates (including students) should procure voting rights within the division. This is a HUGE step for our students and this level of representation is something we have been advocating for, as our students make up ONE-THIRD of Division 19 membership! I hope many of you take advantage of the opportunity to vote and engage in a more active role withiin the division.

The election for selecting new leaders within our division starts today! Affiliates who have paid their 2019 dues should receive a ballot by midnight tonight (04/23) – if you do not, please contact APA Elections Director, Garnett Coad (gcoad@apa.org). You can read about candidates for all open positions here: https://www.militarypsych.org/vote.html. Some candidates have their own websites with additional information, so be sure to check that out as well. If you’d like more information on the platforms for the candidates running for the President-Elect position, consider viewing our Town Hall meeting hosted by our current President-Elect, Dr. Eric Surface. You can find that recording on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/cQJrH43KtdI

As our student membership continues to expand, I want to encourage students who are interested in getting more involved to consider applying for a campus representative position. Campus representatives serve as our point of contact for their institution and as a liaison between the greater Division 19 and students on their campus. If there is sufficient interest in military psychology and related topics on your campus, a campus representative can also start (or reactivate) a campus chapter. Chapters function as clubs, and related duties may include planning and organizing events, volunteering in the community, and/or collaborating with other chapters.

If you are interested in applying for a campus representative position at your institution or university, please visit: http://www.division19students.org/campus-representatives.html where you can find more information about the position and our current application form. Additional questions? Feel free to contact the SAC at div19studentrep@gmail.com and I will be happy to assist!

Thank you for your time and commitment to our society and the field of military psychology. I wish you the best of luck as we move toward the close of the academic year. For our students who are graduating in the fall, I hope you consider staying on with our division as an Early Career Psychologist. If you have any questions about how to successfully transition from a student to an ECP, please contact our current Student-ECP Liaison, Michelle Koster at michelle.koster@my.wheaton.edu.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Very Respectfully,

Jourdin Navarro, M.A.
Chair, Student Affairs Committee
