Student Funding


 Division 19 gracefully offers assistance to our student members for funding research or assisting with travel to the APA Convention each year.

We currently have two options for student funding within the division. The applications cycles for these opportunities recur annually and the deadlines are listed below. If you have questions about these funding opportunities, please don't hesitate to contact us at div19studentrep@gmail.com

Travel Award
The Student Travel Award helps students interested in military psychology travel to the APA's Annual Convention to present their research.

Division 19 Student Travel Awards assist graduate/undergraduate students of psychology travel to APA's convention and present their research. These awards are $750 each. Up to 12 travel awards of $750 each to graduate/undergraduate students who have demonstrated excellence in advancing the science and practice of military psychology. 

Award recipients will be required to volunteer for one 2-hour time slot in the Division 19 Hospitality Suite during the Convention. Time slot selection will occur in advance of the Convention and will be on a first-come first-served basis.

Annual Deadline: 31 March
Eligibility
  1. Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate/undergraduate program in psychology.
  2. Applicants must be student affiliates of Division 19. 
  3. Applicants who are not Division 19 student affiliates must apply to become one online prior to submitting materials for this Award; the Division 19 Student Travel Award Committee must receive all materials in a complete PDF formatted package.
  4. Demonstrate excellence in advancing the science and practice of military psychology (i.e. milpsych research, active and engaged campus/regional representative/ student chapter network, volunteerism).  
  5. Only one author can apply for a multiple author poster accepted at the convention.  

How To Apply
  • The Division 19 Student Travel Award Committee will examine all applications for eligibility. Applicants must complete the Student Travel Award Application. The application form must be typed and submitted with the following materials: 
    • Two-page maximum typed cover letter describing your research interests and experience, as well as career plans. 
    • Three-page maximum Curriculum Vitae including scientific publications and presentations.
  • The application form and the additional materials listed above must be scanned into one PDF document and emailed to the student representative for submission. Each applicant should keep a copy of the submitted materials.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Funds will be provided directly to the students following the announcement of the award recipients in order to ensure the funds are received prior to the annual convention date.
  • Each recipient is required to attend the Division 19 business meeting at APA to be formally presented the award.
Research Grant

The Society for Military Psychology (Division 19 of the American Psychological Association) announces its annual competition for Division 19 Student Research Grants. The purpose of the Division 19 Student Research Grant program is to assist graduate/undergraduate students of psychology (clinical, I/O, cognitive, applied, etc.) with costs associated with conducting research. Up to two (2) Student Research Grants of $1500 each will be awarded annually. This annual award will be presented to students whose research reflects excellence in military psychology. The award winner(s) may request up to $750 in dedicated travel funds to aid with in-person APA Convention attendance. 

Please note that Student Research Grant award recipients are REQUIRED to present their findings at the upcoming APA Convention in August. Recipients will have the option to present in-person (eligible for travel award) or virtually (not eligible for travel award). There is no expectation research will be completed prior to presenting at the convention. For example, recipients may opt to present their proposal, an overview of current progress, and anticipated results.

All application materials must be submitted no later than 31 October at 2359 (11:59 PM) EST via email.

Eligibility
  1. Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate/undergraduate program in psychology.  
  2. Applicants must be student affiliates of Division 19.  
  3. Applicants who are not Division 19 student affiliates must apply to become one online  prior to submitting materials for this Grant; the Division 19 Student Research Grant Committee must receive all materials in a complete PDF formatted package.
  4. Applicants must have had their proposals approved by a faculty advisor prior to application. 
  5. The proposed research may be in any area of interest dealing with military psychology, including, but not limited to, clinical/healthcare, human factors, cognitive, and industrial/organizational research.

How To Apply
The Div. 19 Student Research Grant Committee will examine all applications for eligibility and review the application packet in accordance with guidelines specified on the Div. 19 website. The packet will include: 
  • The ​Student Research Grant Application form​​ printed legibly or typed. 
  • One-page maximum typed cover letter describing your research interests, experience and career plans. 
  • Five-page maximum summary of the research, including an explanation of research design, other important aspects of the project and a brief justification of proposed use of funds (i.e., budget). The $1,500 award must be used to support expenses that are directly related to the research (e.g., computer time, animal care, equipment, participant fees); it may not be used for tuition or personal expenses. If travel funds are being requested, include the request (up to $750) in the proposal's budget. Please note: Figures or tables may be included only if they can be incorporated into the five-page research summary. Title pages and references do not count towards the five-page maximum.
  • Two-page maximum curriculum vitae with training, research, publication and presentation experience. 
  • One-page maximum letter of recommendation from your academic adviser or professor.
  • The application packet files must be scanned into one PDF document and emailed to the Student Affairs Committee no later than 11:59 PM EST. 
  • Each applicant should keep a copy of the submitted materials. Applications that do not follow the guidelines above will not be considered.
  • Award recipients will be announced in December.  Funds will be provided directly to students following the announcement of the award recipients.
  • Student Research Grants will be scored by the Div. 19 Awards Committee based on this rubric.
