Division 19 Students Stand Against Racism
Systemic racism is an ongoing issue in the United States that impacts every fabric of our society, including the military. The recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery brought to our attention the widespread police brutality and institutional oppression against Black people. We, as the Society for Military Psychology Student Affairs Committee, are cognizant of our role as one of the representative student bodies in military psychology. Recent events reminded us once again that racism remains a prevalent problem in our nation. We believe that racism and discrimination are intolerable. More importantly, as future leaders, we have an obligation and duty to proactively address inequity in the society. Hence, we challenge our student affiliates to reflect on their cultural identities and privileges as well as their personal relationships with racism.
As a group of students, we recognize the value and importance of diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives and we openly welcome all to our community. Without the contributions of BIPOC to Division 19, military psychology would not be the professional organization it is today. That being said, we can all do better and are committed to taking action to create equity within our profession. Acknowledging that this conversation should’ve taken place much sooner, the Division 19 Student Affairs Committee is planning a series of conversational hours to address racism and diversity within military psychology. It is incumbent on all students, as future leaders in military psychology, to not only become allies of people of color but also to take continuous action toward changing systemic racism and injustice. The Student Affairs Committee is also seeking feedback regarding how we can create a more inclusive and equitable culture within Division 19. We also call other APA Divisions to join us in addressing systemic racism within psychology. The Student Affairs Committee stands with the greater division 19 leadership and acknowledge we are Stronger Together. Our committee is committed to this issue and are planning the following: ACTION ITEM: July 10th, 8 PM - D19 Student Affairs Committee will be hosting a conversation on racism, diversity, and issues of culture in military psychology. Please keep an eye out on social media and our email listserv for details. ACTION ITEM: As a leadership committee we have decided to only post recommended readings on our website that support equity, diversity, and inclusion. ACTION ITEM: We will host a virtual APA Convention event focused on continuing this conversation with a panel of distinguished speakers followed by breakout groups to have smaller group discussion on the topic of racism. Resources for students Below is a working document that provides resources for people who are seeking to become better allies. In order to facilitate growth, this document breaks down resources by stage of white identity development (Helms) and corresponding beliefs/thoughts/actions. Within each section, you will find activities, podcasts, videos, and articles, as well as information about what to do next. Also included are social media accounts that are helpful in this growth, as well as faith-based resources for those who want to be a better anti-racist within their faith traditions.
