New position: Student member-at- large

HISTORY:
Back in February 2020 the Student Affairs Committee proposed a by-law amendment to our division’s Executive Committee. The request, if approved would start the process of creating of a student voting position within Division 19 titled “Student Member-at-Large.” Although the division is incredibly supportive of student voices, students currently have limited voting privileges in division business. The committee passed this motion in February, so we got working on establishing the Student Member-At-Large position. To formally establish the position, the amendment would also need to be approved by a quorum of division members at the 2020 Business Meeting. We are pleased to announce it passed!

So, what does this mean exactly? Essentially, this position creates a new seat on the division’s executive committee (EXCOM). Each EXCOM member has one vote to approve toward various inter-division requests and initiatives. Creating a position for a student on this committee brings the voice of all of you to division decision making. Division 19 is extremely supportive of students and are most commonly in support of the many student initiatives we propose. What’s also great about this new position is it creates yet another amazing opportunity for a student in our division to develop as a leader, make an impact on the society, and build their professional skills at the national level.

Responsibilities include attending the APA conference, the Division 19 midyear meeting (which occurs annually in February), communicate student members wants and needs, and vote in favor of student initiatives on the EXCOM. This is an incredibly rewarding position as a student leader. In this position, you will be closely connected to the Student Affairs Committee as an Ad Hoc member on said committee. Together, we will discuss, support, adjust, and implement division wide initiatives and policies.

This is an elected position for one student. The division membership votes for new leadership positions in April, annually.

NOMINATIONS:
Every year, the Society for Military Psychology’s Elections Committee asks its members to participate in the democratic process. We ask some to volunteer and run for office. We ask all who are eligible to participate in our Society’s governance by voting. Both acts ensure the strength of our Society now and in the future.

The Elections Committee accepts nominations for the positions of Student Member-at-Large.  You are also encouraged to reach out to the student affairs committee if you have any questions about this position.

Please check back here for an estimated nomination deadline for the 2022 election cycle. Contact div19.elections@gmail.com with questions!

Nominations should include the individual’s name, e-mail address, phone number, and the position for which they are being nominated. We ask that before you nominate someone for a position, you confirm their interest in the position.  Self-nominations are welcome.  If you have questions about eligibility or the nomination process, please contact any member of the Elections Committee.

We also ask all members to ensure their annual dues are paid in order to receive a voting ballot from APA. Thanks for participating in the democratic process and ensuring our Society has strong leadership for the future.
